A photo straight out of a camera or a phone is prepared for printing, not for a screen. It arrives 4000 pixels wide when the site only shows 1200, carries GPS and camera metadata, and uses a compression quality no eye can tell from half of it. Fixing those three things usually cuts 70 to 90% of the size without anyone noticing.
Loading speed is an acknowledged ranking factor, and page experience metrics measure exactly how long the largest visible element takes to appear — which, on a normal page, is an image. On slower mobile connections, the gap between 3 MB and 300 KB is the gap between someone waiting and someone closing the tab.
Compression happens inside your browser. That counts especially when the images are client work, unreleased products or internal documents: there is no upload, so there is no copy on somebody else’s server. You see before and after side by side and decide where to stop.
For photographs, quality between 75 and 85 is the range where almost nobody spots a difference on screen. Below 60, banding starts showing in skies and gradients. For logos and images containing text, use lossless PNG or WebP.
